The Coesfeld Heat Build-Up Analyser is the ideal instrument for calibrating and validating dissipative and exothermic material behavior for use in steady state and transient heat build up simulations.  Also, it is the ideal rubber compound development lab test for applications exhibiting significant temperature rise and / or thermal runaway or “blowout”.  The HBU Analyser utilizes a cylindrical beam specimen deformed in bending to apply strain.  The specimen rotates, producing dynamic tension/compression strain cycles.  The effects of viscoelastic heating are observed through the temperature rise at two locations: the test specimen centerline, and the external surface.

Exothermic thermal runaway conditions can also be observed when rapid oxidation and/or volatilization produces internal pressurization and specimen “blow out”.  The animation below, recorded with an infrared camera, shows the final moments of a test on the HBU Analyser.  The animation clearly shows the typical elevated temperatures, internal pressure rise and ultimate thermal runaway failure.
